On “Rule of Three,” the latest single from Raleigh indie rockers Goddamn Wolves, Laura McCullough steps confidently into the spotlight as the song’s lead vocalist and writer, it’s the fourth song to feature her in that role. The song leans into the band’s instinct to turn darker imagery into immediate, energetic music, weaving references to daggers, vampire hunters, werewolves, and devils into a deliberately chaotic world.
Drew Foglia’s drumming is supple, a solid backbone that keeps the song moving with purpose and lets the guitars spread out around it. The newest member, Jon Trexler, adds more color to the guitar landscape Chris Weilding has created, making the instrumental presence fuller without sacrificing the track’s punch. “Rule of Three” is grounded by McCullough’s vocal delivery, which counters the dark imagery with a palpable sense of character.
As soon as “Rule of Three” settles into its stride, it takes a surprising turn that leads to a next-level guitar solo courtesy of Chris Weilding. That final shift adds another layer of excitement and makes the ending feel earned, not predictable. Goddamn Wolves have a knack for making chaos seem exciting, contagious, and vibrant, and “Rule of Three” is a spirited demonstration of this ability.
