Bastien Pons peels back perception in haunting debut in “Blinded”

(A Tactile Soundscape That Unsettles, Envelops, and Transcends)

With "Blinded," French sound artist Bastien Pons offers more than just an album; he presents an immersive atmosphere. Drawing from his experience in black-and-white photography and musique concrète, Pons sculpts sound like light and shadow, creating a debut that focuses less on melody and more on movement, memory, and the ambiguous space between sensation and silence.

The title track, "Blinded," opens like a subterranean dream: slow, reverberating pulses echo against textured field recordings, creating a landscape that feels both industrial and organic. Static crackles like gravel underfoot. Metallic drones stretch across the sonic horizon, while faint, ghost-like rhythms emerge from beneath. It’s music you don’t just hear, you feel it crawling through your nerves.

There is no traditional structure in "Blinded"; there is no chorus to hold on to or verse to provide comfort. Instead, the piece takes you through a sonic chiaroscuro, as if each sound were a photograph slowly developing in a darkroom. Pons’ training under Bernard Fort is evident in his precise use of space and silence. Each sonic fragment is intentional and carefully placed to distort your perception while sharpening your attention.

For fans of Lustmord, Coil, or Murcof, "Blinded" is a profound exploration of fragility and form. Bastien Pons doesn’t just create songs; he sculpts experiences, and this debut proves he is a master of the unsettling sublime.
