Rising artist DBLA isn't just knocking but kicking the door open with his third EP, 'PATRIOT,' directly into the alternative scene. And if the focus track "YK" is a slow-burn spark that catches musically and emotionally. It has the DNA of indie rock classics Smashing Pumpkins vibes all over it, but it's never overly thoughtful. Instead, DBL A recycles that power, packages it in its trademark roughness, and dishes it with an incredibly honest modern twist.
The emotional weight of the track lands early. Heartfelt, half-sung, half-whispered, and half-confessed vocals hover over gritty guitar tones and stripped-down rhythms. It's that old familiar ache in your chest that you can't quite put a name to, but DBL A does give it a voice. The production, helmed adeptly by the Manchester-based producer B-seen, knows when to push and when to pull, matching punchy moments with openhearted vulnerability. It's a tug-of-war between heartache and hope, and you find yourself caught in the crossfire in the best way.
Shot by Manchester visual artist Jack Turner, the music video, too, offers a cinematic dimension to the song's inward solace. If "YK" feels like a letter you never sent, the video is that one moment of finally hitting send. Via London Bridge APOLLO and pushed by sister PR company WHITEBOARD, DBL A shows that complex craft and creative growth can lead to something seriously Special; there is energy behind this release. Fresh from a whirlwind of live performances at Brighton's The Great Escape Festival, he's preparing for a headline show at London's Moustache Bar on July 24th and a Manchester release party when the EP lands on June 20th, 2025.
"YK" may be DBLA's most emotionally vulnerable cut yet, but it never relinquishes fidelity. It's just that rare blend of substance and style that makes you crave more. With a "release-heavy" future in sight, DBLA isn't just making music but creating a universe. And the invitation is "YK." Don't sleep on this one. DBL A is carving his lane one vulnerable, grimy anthem at a time.
